This Special Series on “Aortic and Mitral Valve Innovative Surgery” is edited by Dr. Filip Casselman, from Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, OLV Clinic, Aalst, Belgium; and Dr. Johan van der Merwe, from Atlantic Cardiovascular and Thoracic Institute, Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, Sunningdale, South Africa.
Dr. Filip Casselman’s interests include minimally invasive surgery, valvular reconstructive surgery, percutaneous valve replacement and arrhythmia surgery. He is actively involved in cardiac clinical research and has participated in multiple multicenter trials. He is (co)author of more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has given more than 250 presentations at international meetings.
Dr. Johan van der Merwe qualified as specialist cardiothoracic surgeon and intensivist in 2010 (University of Pretoria, South Africa) at the age of 32 years and was awarded a 2-year fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, sub-specializing in advanced thoracic oncology surgery, endoscopic lung resections (VATS), endobronchial interventional surgery, mitral valve repair surgery, trans-catheter aortic valve replacement and mitral clip implantation.
