Todd L. Demmy, MD, FACS, FCCP
Department of Thoracic Surgery, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY, USA
Dr. Demmy is a Professor of Oncology in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Roswell Park Cancer Institute where he has practiced since 2002. He is also Professor of Surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has served as site leader and national PI on several clinical trials involving lung cancer and was a Thoracic Surgery Cadre leader and Executive Committee member in the CALGB (later merged to the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology). There he noted that there were many opportunities to improve clinical trial accrual and helped to form CARE (Committee on Advocacy, Research communications, and Ethics) to deal with these issues.
His main clinical research activity has been to establish, invent instrumentation for and facilitate adoption of minimally invasive approaches for treating lung cancer, especially in populations like frail or high-risk patients. To this end, Dr. Demmy recently published a review of the scientific evidence supporting the oncologic validity of minimally invasive lobectomy. Another promising program on which he is currently working is the thoracoscopic facilitated delivery of regional lung chemotherapy (“pulmonary suffusion”) for sarcoma metastases.
