Dr. Plestis is System Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Main Line Health, and the Director of the Aortic Wellness Center at Lankenau Heart Institute, Wynnewood, PA.
Dr. Plestis earned his medical degree from Aristotelian University Medical School in Thessaloniki, Greece. He completed a General Surgery residency at Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York, a Vascular Surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston under Dr. Michael E. Debakey and a Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York.
As a nationally recognized leader in the field of cardiac surgery, Dr. Plestis has more than 20 years of experience in aortic surgery and has performed over 1,500 aortic procedures spanning every segment of the aorta with excellent outcomes. Since his arrival in 2014, Main Line Health has quickly become one of the highest volume cardiac centers in the region. Under his leadership, surgery cases have doubled surpassing 1,000 cases last year, positioning the Lankenau Heart Institute as a destination for complex cardiovascular in the Philadelphia region and beyond. He is a Professor at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International Academy of Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis. He currently serves as President of the Delaware Valley Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Dr. Plestis has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed journals, participated in an array of clinical trials and is a frequent invited lecturer at national and international conferences on aortic surgery. He performs surgery, both nationally and internationally, and is renowned as one of the pioneers of applying minimally invasive techniques in the management of complex aortic disease. Cardiac surgeons from all over the world have viewed his high-quality surgical videos on Youtube and CTSNet. His memberships include the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Society of Vascular Surgery, Michael DeBakey International Surgical Society, International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society.
