Nicolas Demartines

Prof Demartines is Professor of Surgery, and Chairman of the Department for Visceral Surgery at the University Hospital CHUV in Lausanne Switzerland since 2006. His clinical and surgical activity focused on oncologic surgery, mainly hepato-pancreatico-biliary, colorectal surgery, and oesophagus surgery. 

His research interest includes the entire perioperative management and minimal invasive approaches especially in oncologic patients. In this field, nutrition and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs (ERAS) are now well established, and his department belongs to the international leader in this promising field. Prof Demartines is member of the ERAS Society Executive Board. 

Another important aspect of the research in his department is the influence of postoperative complications on oncological outcome, as well as the multimodal treatment of non-operable liver metastasis, moreover,  HIPEC and PIPAC (Pressurized Intra Peritoneal Chemotherapy minimal invasive). Prof Demartines is member of the Faculty at The European Institute of Telesurgery IRCAD-EITS in Strasbourg France, Board member of the International Surgical Course in Davos Switzerland, member of the Scientific Committee of the European Surgical Association, and Board member of both Swiss Society of Surgery and Swiss Society of visceral Surgery. He is member of the council of the British Journal of Surgery. He served as an expert at the French National Institute for Cancer (INCA) and is member of the editorial board of five peer-reviewed journals. He makes regularly review for about 25 journals. He has over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has lectured both nationally and internationally mainly on ERAS program, on immunonutrition, antibiotics in surgery and on multimodal treatment of liver metastasis.
