Preface for the Penile Prosthesis Surgery issue

Since its inception in the 1970s, the penile prosthesis has undergone numerous developments and improvements. Owing to these advancements, penile prosthesis surgery is currently considered the gold standard for the management of severe and refractory erectile dysfunction. This procedure is, however, quite delicate, and advanced training is necessary to achieve the best possible esthetic and functional outcomes for men hoping to restore their erectile function. Similarly, in particular scenarios such as previous infections, redo surgeries, Peyronie’s disease, transgender and neophallus surgeries, to name a few, this surgery can be quite complex and humbling.

As the demands for penile prosthesis increase and the devices become more readily available globally, it is imperative that surgeons opting to perform these delicate surgeries be better educated and trained. This includes better knowledge of the various available devices, optimal patient selection and preparation, surgical planning, surgical techniques, and management of complications. To that end, we have herein compiled a video library covering a wide spectrum of topics which we feel will aid surgeons to develop, improve and master the skills necessary for penile prosthetic surgery.

We would like to thank all the authors for their valuable contributions to this special issue as well as the editorial office of the Journal of Visualized Surgery for their support. We truly believe that this collection of videos represents one of the most complete video summaries of penile prosthesis surgery.
