Professor Steven DeMeester: focus on the long-term outcomes

In the West China 2015 Forum on Esophagology, the Editorial Office of Journal of Visualized Surgery (JOVS) has the great honor inviting Prof. Steven DeMeester (Figure 1), from the University of Southern California, to share with our readers his expectation on the future development of research on esophagus disease in China as well as his suggestion to the next generation of thoracic surgeons.

Prof. Steven R. DeMeester, MD, is a professor and clinical scholar in the department of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Southern California. He has extensive experience in the field of advanced laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery for the treatment of reflux disease, and is an expert in the field of minimally invasive approaches for pulmonary and esophageal surgery. He has published numerous clinical articles and book chapters on thoracic surgery and advanced laparoscopic techniques and has spoken on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) nationally.

During the forum, Prof. DeMeester focused all his attention on every lecture. In the discussion section, he was also actively involved in putting forward many insightful questions to almost every lecturer and shared with others his own experience, which earned him a lot admiration from all the experts and doctors as well as brought much brilliance to the forum. In the interview, he also shared his precious suggestion that Chinese researchers should pay much attention on long-term outcomes instead of short-term one (Figure 2).
