Dr. Marco Scarci: always moving forward in surgery
The 2nd Cambridge International Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) Symposium was successfully held in the Madingley Hall, Cambridge, United Kingdom on Oct. 16th and Oct. 17th, 2015. In this symposium, the Editorial Board of Journal of Visualized Surgery (JOVS) had the great honor to have an interview with Dr. Marco Scarci (Figure 1), course director of the symposium as well as guest editor for two special issues, one on “Pectus Surgery” and the other dedicated to the 2nd Cambridge International VATS Symposium, of JOVS.
Dr. Scarci is a thoracic surgeon in Papworth Hospital, United Kingdom. He works closely with a large team including other surgeons, specialist nurses, radiologists and physicians to provide together with them the best outcome for patients. He has put together and is currently the lead for the enhanced recovery programs. Dr. Scarci’s key focus is minimally invasive surgery, chest wall deformities and Nuss procedure with his areas of major interest being resection of locally advanced cancer, malignant mesothelioma, and rehabilitation after thoracic surgery and clinical trials. He also has a keen interest in medical education and, after several courses, he is currently doing a master in medical education.
Mr Scarci is actively involved with the worldwide cardiothoracic surgery network (CTSNet), the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons and as a member of the new technologies and innovation workgroup and education and surgical manpower of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Scarci also teaches and presents regularly at regional, national and international meetings (Royal Society of Medicine, Royal College of Surgeons of England and European Association among others).
In the interview, Dr. Scarci, as the course director of the 2nd Cambridge International VATS Symposium, told us the biggest difference of this symposium, compared to the last year’s, lies on the fact that more and more surgeons are turning from two-, three-port surgery to uniportal surgery, which is also a great advance of the development of VATS. Dr. Scarci also shared with us his perspective on the multi-disciplinary cooperation. At the end, Dr. Scarci indicated that the thoracic world is always moving forward with lots of development and advances going on, which is also the reason that he loves about surgery (Figure 2).
