Dr. Joel Dunning: surgery keeps you active and exciting
The 2nd Cambridge International Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) Symposium was successfully held in the Madingley Hall, Cambridge, United Kingdom on Oct. 16th and Oct. 17th, 2015. In this symposium, Dr. Joel Dunning (Figure 1), from James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, shared his practice and perspective on microlobectomy, earning lots of applause from other experts. During the symposium, the Editorial Office of Journal of Visualized Surgery (JOVS) had the great honor to have an interview with Dr. Joel Dunning.
Dr. Dunning is a surgeon with an interest in thoracic surgery, including lung cancer surgery and particularly VATS lobectomy and thymectomy, the Nuss procedure, rib plating and chest wall surgery. He has started, with his team, a new programme of Robotic Thoracic Surgery and is only the second unit in the country to offer this. Dr. Dunning is an associate editor of the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EJCTS), managing the Cardiac General Section of the EJCTS and the Best Evidence Topics (BETs) section of the Interactive Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery (ICVTS). He is also the co-editor-in-chief of cardiothoracic surgery network (CTSNet) and a co-founder of the Cardiac Surgery Advanced Life Support (CALS) course, which teaches safer emergency care after cardiac surgery to units and clinicians all over the world.
In the interview, Dr. Dunning analyzed many advantages of microlobectomy based on drainage and pain. He also shared with us the principles needed to be observed when starting microlobectomy and his advice to the training for young thoracic surgeons. In the last, when talking about the question written on a post board in this year’s American College of Surgeons (ACS)—What do you love about surgery, Dr. Dunning instantly told us his own answer—surgery keeps him active and exciting for 25 years (Figure 2)!
